HC Deb 14 April 1919 vol 114 cc2473-4
15. Lieutenant-Colonel GUINNESS

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the restrictions on alien firms trading in British non-ferrous metals are less severe in Great Britain than in Australia; and whether any steps are in contemplation to act in conformity with the Australian Government in preventing the re-establishment of alien influences in the control of this industry?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I am aware that the Australian restrictions to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers go beyond those in force in this country, in that they exclude all aliens of whatever nationality and all naturalised persons from membership of the Metal Exchange; but as at present advised my right hon. Friend does not think it possible to impose restrictions exactly similar in this country.

Lieutenant-Colonel GUINNESS

Will the hon. Gentleman heighten up the restrictions?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I will convey that suggestion to my right hon. Friend.

Mr. BOTTOMLEY

When the hon. Gentleman says "as at present advised," advised by whom?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

By his usual advisers.

Mr. BOTTOMLEY

Who are they!
