HC Deb 14 April 1919 vol 114 c2486
70. Commander Sir EDWARD NICHOLL

asked the Minister of Labour how long it is proposed to continue payments to the unemployed; and if he is aware that in many parts of the country neither men nor women will look for or accept work whilst this benefit is continued?

Sir R. HORNE

The out-of-work donation scheme for civilian workers as at present constituted, including the original and reduced benefit, comes to an end on 25th November next; but no individual will be entitled to payment for more than twenty-six weeks during the year ending on that date. It is a condition of the receipt of donation that applicants shall be unable to obtain suitable employment, and if it is shown that they have refused such employment, donation is suspended and the cases are brought before the local Courts of Referees.

Sir J. BUTCHER

Is there any punishment awarded to people who obtain these donations by false statements?

Sir R. HORNE

I have no doubt my hon. and learned Friend knows that prosecutions have already taken place.

Mr. JOHN JONES

Are other people, living for nothing, being prosecuted?
