HC Deb 14 April 1919 vol 114 cc2477-8
23. Sir KINGSLEY WOOD

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture whether he is aware that thirty-four allotment holders at Cassiobury Park Avenue, Watford, have received notice to quit their allotments immediately; whether these allotment-holders have paid a year's rent in advance, this expiring in March, 1920; and whether he will take steps to secure that the agreement with these holders is carried out or, failing a satisfactory settlement under the present agreement, that this land shall be scheduled under the Cultivation of Lands Order and the holders made secure in their tenure for at least the period to the end of this year?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Sir Arthur Boscawen)

The Board received a report on the 26th March to the effect that the allotment-holders of the land in question were to be allowed to remain in occupation until building commenced, but in view of what is stated by my hon. Friend further inquiries will be made, the result of which will be communicated to him.

24. Sir K. WOOD

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Agriculture whether he is aware that the widow of Sergeant-Detective Burton, 45, Meads Road, Edgware, who died two months ago, has been ordered by the Great Northern Railway Company to quit the allotment held by her late husband at Edgware Station for the past twelve years; whether no notice was given to Mrs. Burton terminating the tenancy; whether this allotment is to be given to one of the company's servants, who could have obtained another allotment as conveniently situated in the district; and whether, seeing that all preparations have been made by Mrs. Burton for the coming season's crops, the ground has been prepared, and seeds, etc., purchased, and seeing that she is in reduced circumstances and the allotment will be more necessary now to help the family income, he will take steps to secure that this widow is not evicted from the allotment?

Sir A. BOSCAWEN

I am in communication with the Great Northern Railway Company regarding this case, but the Board have no jurisdiction regarding allotments provided and let by railway companies, and have no power to interfere.
