HC Deb 10 April 1919 vol 114 cc2201-2
27. Commander BELLAIRS

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he will state what were the maximum and minimum numbers of officers under training, exclusive of holidays, at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, in 1913?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the ADMIRALTY (Dr. Macnamara)

The maximum number was 133; the minimum number (for a short period only) was fifty-nine.

28. Commander BELLAIRS

asked what is the area of ground and the area occupied by buildings in what is comprised by Greenwich Hospital; what is the extent of the river frontage; what is the annual payment made by the Admiralty to the funds of Greenwich Hospital for the use made of it as the Royal Naval College?

Dr. MACNAMARMA

The buildings, occupy 4½ acres of the grounds of Greenwich Hospital, which are 18¼ acres in. extent, apart from the ground and buildings of the Dreadnought Seamen's Hospital. The river frontage is 900 ft. The annual contribution paid by the Admiralty in respect of the Royal Naval College is £6,500. The cost of upkeep of the buildings and grounds of the college is also borne by Navy Votes. The rates, I may add, are paid by the Treasury valuer.

Commander BELLAIRS

Have the Board considered getting rid of this white elephant, and handing it over to the Imperial War Museum, or has there been any discussion with the First Commissioner of Works on that point?

Dr. MACNAMARA

I do not recognise it by the description "white elephant."

Commander BELLAIRS

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider the matter?

Dr. MACNAMARA

I will submit the view that it should be handed over, but I cannot imagine that the Board would agree.
