HC Deb 10 April 1919 vol 114 cc2215-6
62. Mr. SITCH

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in the event of his agreeing to give effect to the proposal now being pressed from certain quarters that he should include in the forthcoming Budget some provision for taxing bachelors as such, he will consider the advisability of qualifying any provision of that nature so as to ensure some distinction between bachelors who have no dependants and those who have, in order to prevent any hardships falling upon the latter, many of whom remain out of wedlock through an honourable recognition of claims upon them for support from aged parents or near relatives who might otherwise become chargeable to the ratepayers under the Poor Law?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I have noted the hon. Member's suggestion.
