HC Deb 03 April 1919 vol 114 cc1377-8
67. Captain COOTE

asked the President of the Board of Education what steps have been taken in pursuance of the powers conferred on the Board under Section 17 of the Education Act, 1918, to supply, maintain, and equip playing fields, other than the ordinary playgrounds, for the use of children attending national schools?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD OF EDUCATION (Mr. Herbert Lewis)

The Board have not yet received any proposals from local education authorities for their approval of arrangements under the Section referred to. The absence of proposals is no doubt partly attributable to the financial restrictions imposed during the War on the raising of loans by local authorities, and partly to the great pressure of work and the depletion of staff by which local education authorities have been embarrassed.
