HC Deb 03 April 1919 vol 114 cc1360-1
26. Sir J. D. REES

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the resuscitation of recruitment of native labour in Nyasaland in favour of South Africa is contemplated; and, if so, whether he is aware of the heavy mortality which resulted when such was formerly in force, and of the fact that labour is deficient for the ordinary operations of agriculture in the Protectorate itself?

Lieutenant-Colonel AMERY

The Acting Governor of Nyasaland has informed the Secretary of State that the Chamber of Commerce is submitting a petition asking that the recruitment of native labour in Nyasaland for South Africa may not be allowed. This petition has, I understand, just been dispatched. When it arrives the whole matter will receive the most careful consideration.
