26. Sir J. D. REESasked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the resuscitation of recruitment of native labour in Nyasaland in favour of South Africa is contemplated; and, if so, whether he is aware of the heavy mortality which resulted when such was formerly in force, and of the fact that labour is deficient for the ordinary operations of agriculture in the Protectorate itself?
§ Lieutenant-Colonel AMERYThe Acting Governor of Nyasaland has informed the Secretary of State that the Chamber of Commerce is submitting a petition asking that the recruitment of native labour in Nyasaland for South Africa may 1361 not be allowed. This petition has, I understand, just been dispatched. When it arrives the whole matter will receive the most careful consideration.
