HC Deb 05 November 1918 vol 110 c1922
51. Colonel LOWTHER

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the countless acts of brutality perpetrated by the German people during the War, the Government will consider the advisability of introducing legislation to require the re-naming of all streets in this country at present bearing German names?

Mr. BONAR LAW

This matter can, I think, be left with the local authorities, which have the power to deal with it.

Colonel LOWTHER

Will the Government consider the advisability of changing the names of Coburg and Brunswick to Cavell, Fryatt, or Cornwell?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I should not like to make any promise about that. We are engaged, I think, in matters more important.

Mr. KING

Will Peers like Lord Denbigh, who have German names, be compelled to change them?
