HC Deb 05 November 1918 vol 110 cc1927-8
67. Mr. LESLIE SCOTT

asked the President of the Local Government Board how many local authorities have since the 18th March, 1918, undertaken to build houses for the working classes immediately after the War, distinguishing between urban and rural and classifying the urban authorities under the various types, county, borough, etc.; what is the total number of houses covered by the above undertakings under the different heads above mentioned; and within what periods such local authorities have undertaken to build such houses?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Stephen Walsh)

The following local authorities have undertaken to build approximately the number of houses specified, namely—

Houses.
41 County Borough Councils 35,256
70 Non-County Borough Councils 16,304
150 Urban District Councils 34,306
93 Rural District Councils 13,822
Making a total of 99,688
In addition
7 County Borough Councils,
18 Non-County Borough Councils,
51 Urban District Councils, and
59 Rural District Councils
have undertaken to build houses, but the number of houses is not determined. The local authorities mentioned have not undertaken to build within a specified period.

Mr. ROWNTREE

In view of the comparatively small number of houses suggested, can the hon. Gentleman say that the problem of housing is likely to come under the review of the President of the Local Government Board?

Mr. WALSH

That is a matter of policy on which I am not entitled to speak.
