HC Deb 05 November 1918 vol 110 cc1925-6
59. Mr. FIELD

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the House will be afforded an opportunity to discuss the proposals suggested by the Committee appointed last January on currency problems after the War; and whether it is intended to adopt a gold-standard money trust system upon an insufficient supply of gold or whether it will be expedient to continue the issue of paper money guaranteed by the different nations?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I do not think that any useful purpose would be served by such a discussion at present.

Mr. FIELD

Is the House to understand that the whole question of currency will be left in the hands of gentlemen who have an immediate interest in the money and in gold?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Oh, no! If the hon. Member refers to the members of that Committee he will find they have no powers; they were only appointed to give advice.

Mr. FIELD

Will that advice be considered by the House?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Undoubtedly. I think it is a question the House will have to consider at some time, but I do not think this is the proper time.
