HC Deb 04 November 1918 vol 110 c1784
72. Mr. DILLON

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether, in view of the approaching General Election, he will immediately withdraw the Proclamation prohibiting the holding of public meetings in Ireland without police permits?

The CHIEF SECRETARY for IRELAND (Mr. Shortt)

As soon as the date of a General Election is announced, steps will be taken to suspend the Regulation requiring police permits to be obtained for political meetings or political processions, but the wearing of what purports to be a military uniform and seditious speeches will remain illegal, and subject to punishment.

Mr. DILLON

Does the right hon. Gentleman mean that after the election is over this obnoxious Order will be put into force again?

Mr. SHORTT

That will be a matter for consideration.
