HC Deb 14 May 1918 vol 106 cc190-1
29. Mr. ANDERSON

asked the Minister of Munitions whether a claim for compensation on behalf of Mrs. Bessie James, employed at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, at the Perivale Factory, sent in on 7th September, 1917, has, despite repeated applications, not yet been settled; whether he can give any information as to when a settlement will be reached; and whether he can explain the delays in regard to the settlement of such cases?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of MUNITIONS (Sir Worthington Evans)

Mrs. James was employed on fuse examination at Perivale, Acton. She met with an injury on the 19th August, 1917, when lifting a box of fuses, but continued at works until the 24th of that month. She was then placed on the hurt list, and received hurt pay for fourteen weeks. Further issue was, however, stopped on medical advice that Mrs. James could work if supplied with a truss. Mrs. James has since undergone an operation, and she is understood to be still unfit to resume her work. Instructions have now been given to issue hurt pay to complete the six months provided for in the Scheme of Compensation certified by the Registrar of Friendly Societies, in lieu of the Compensation Act, and for such further period up to three months after that, as may be necessary, until Mrs. James is able to resume work.
