HC Deb 14 May 1918 vol 106 c184
16. Mr. BOOTH

asked the Home Secretary if he wrote on 11th April to the Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey asking for more generous help in men and money for Imperial needs; if so, what response has been made; whether the island has adopted compulsory service; and will he say how it treats the question of conscientious objection to such service?

Sir G. CAVE

I addressed a letter on the date named to the Governor of Guernsey inviting the island to take a further share in the burden of the War, and the States of the island are now considering the-matter. Compulsory service, on lines similar to the British Military Service Acts, was adopted in 1916. The local Statute does not provide for the exemption of conscientious objectors, but I understand the question hardly exists in the island.
