HC Deb 11 March 1918 vol 104 cc11-2
36. Major NEWMAN

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether his attention has been called to the prices charged by some resturants for rationed meat, meatless, and so-called offal dishes since the introduction of the food-card system; and whether, to protect the public, he will add to his staff a controller of restaurant charges armed with appropriate powers?

Mr. CLYNES

No representations have been received by the Food Controller to the effect indicated in the first part of the question. The control of restaurants has been entrusted to the recently-appointed Food Survey Board, who will consider and report from time to time what action, if any, is proper to be taken in respect of restaurant charges.

Mr. W. THORNE

May I ask whether a large number of the restaurant-keepers grab all the fish they can, and that, so far as the East End people are concerned they can get none at all?

Mr. CLYNES

Any condition of things such as that is within the control of the Food Survey Board.
