HC Deb 11 March 1918 vol 104 c31
29. Mr. WATT

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether he is now prepared to advise the release, in order to engage in work of national importance, of John Pridie, at present in Barlinnie Prison, Glasgow, and who has been there for the last twelve months, during eight of which he has been in solitary confinement; is he aware that each of the three tribunals before whom Pridie appeared expressed belief in the bonâ-fide character of his objections to military service; and, in view of the greater leniency of the Home Office scheme, will he reconsider this case?

Mr. CLYDE

I understand that Pridie was refused absolute exemption by the Appeal Tribunal, and that he has declined to accept the only conditions on which the Central Tribunal could consider his case with a view to his release to take up work under the Home Office Committee. My hon. and learned Friend appears to be unaware that this Committee deals in exactly the same way with cases of conscientious objectors both in England and in Scotland.
