HC Deb 11 March 1918 vol 104 cc12-3
39. Mr. BYRNE

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food if he is aware that any attempt to reduce the gravity of the products of Irish breweries will seriously injure the industry; and if he will see that no such proposal is considered.

Mr. CLYNES

I am, of course, aware that any reduction in gravity is bound to lower the quality of beer. There is, however, a national demand for a certain quantity of beer, and, in view of the situation in respect of cereal foodstuffs, it is impossible to satisfy this demand except by an enforced reduction of gravity.

Mr. BYRNE

Are we to understand from that reply that there is an intention to reduce the gravity of Guinness's products?

Mr. CLYNES

Yes, but even then both beer and stout in the case of Ireland will still remain higher in gravity than in this part of the country. [An HON. MEMBER: "Why?"]
