HC Deb 26 June 1918 vol 107 c1023
4. Colonel YATE

asked the Secretary of State for India if his attention has been called to the complaints regarding the breaking of cargo and the wholesale thefts that are said to be committed on board the steamers plying up and down the Persian Gulf; and what steps, if any, have been taken to put a stop to these practices?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of SHIPPING (Sir Leo Chiozza Money)

I have been asked to reply to this question. No complaints have been received by the Ministry of Shipping as to pilfering of cargoes of vessels plying in the Persian Gulf. Complaints have, however, been received in respect of cargoes of vessels proceeding from this country to Basra, and a competent representative has been sent out to Basra to investigate the matter.
