HC Deb 18 June 1918 vol 107 c151
39. Mr. BOOTH

asked the Home Secretary if any appeal has been made to the Legislature of Jersey to adopt a National Service scheme similar to Great Britain; and how the problem of the conscientious objector is treated in Jersey?

Mr. BRACE

Compulsory service on lines similar to the British Acts of 1916 was put in force by local legislation at the beginning of last year. In April last my right hon. Friend wrote to the Lieutenant-Governor inviting the island to take a further share in the burdens of the War, and I have just heard that a Bill on lines similar to the Military Service Acts of 1918 was passed by the insular Legislature last week. The local Acts do not provide for the exemption of conscientious objectors, but I understand that the question hardly exists in Jersey.
