HC Deb 17 June 1918 vol 107 c11
12. Colonel YATE

asked the Secretary of State for India what has been the result of his communication with the Viceroy regarding the letter of Sir Subramaniya Aiyer, K.C.T.E., to President Wilson?

Mr. MONTAGU

The case has been carefully considered by the Government of India who are causing Sir Subramaniya Aiyer to be informed that they view his action with surprise and regret, but that in view of his great age, failing health, and past judicial services, they lo not propose to take further action. Sir Subramaniya Aiyer will at the same time be warned that any repetition of such conduct could not again be passed over.

General CROFT

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this decision will be received with grave concern throughout the length and breadth of India; and is he going to support that ruling or urge a deprivation of rank.

Mr. MONTAGU

I do not propose to interfere with the discretion of the Viceroy and Government of India in this matter.
