11. Colonel YATE

asked the Secretary of State for India whether, considering that the status of the officers of the Royal Indian Marine is senior to that of officers of the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve of equivalent relative rank, he can now state the result of his reference to the Admiralty as to the grant to officers of the Royal Indian Marine of commissions bearing the King's royal sign manual similar to the commissions issued to the officers of the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve?

Mr. MONTAGU

The question of the possibility of granting to officers of the Royal Indian Marine commissions bearing the King's sign manual is under reference to the Law Officers of the Crown.

Commander BELLAIRS

Will the right hon. Gentleman make haste in this matter? Is he aware that when the Turks entered the War they issued a notice that they would shoot Royal Indian Marine officers who did not bear the King's commission?

Mr. MONTAGU

I am aware of that. Various steps have been taken, but I will expedite them.
