HC Deb 06 June 1918 vol 106 cc1740-1
45. Captain CARR-GOMM

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the fact that the deanery of Durham and the canonry of Worcester have been for some time vacant, and that both posts are now under offer, he will make it a condition of the acceptance of these appointments that the revenues which have been accumulating during the vacancies shall be paid by those appointed to some fund for poor parishes or for assistant curates in the dioceses concerned?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Bonar Law)

Such a condition could not legally be imposed under present conditions. The incomes of the deanery and the canonry are portions of the corporate revenues of the respective capitular bodies, and the disposal of them during a vacancy is determined by the permanent statutes of the respective cathedrals.
