HC Deb 18 July 1918 vol 108 c1225
21. Mr. SNOWDEN

asked the Home Secretary whether he has received allegations of the ill-treatment of soldiers undergoing imprisonment in Wandsworth Detention Barracks; whether, during the last twelve months, there have been any cases of suicide or self-infliction of bodily harm amongst soldiers in that prison; whether allegations have been made fib him that civil prisoners have been compelled to witness brutal treatment of soldiers; and will he inquire into these matters?

Sir G. CAVE

The detention barracks are under War Office administration, and any question as to the treatment of soldiers should be addressed to the Under-Secretary of State for War. I am forwarding to the War Office two complaints just received from conscientious objectors in the civil prison, which relate to the conduct and language of non-commissioned officers engaged in drilling soldiers in the portion of the prison used as detention barracks.
