HC Deb 12 July 1918 vol 108 cc607-8
2. Mr. ANDERSON

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether his attention has been directed to the congestion in respect of housing in certain districts of Sheffield; whether he has seen a report from the highway and sewerage committee to the Sheffield City Council drawing attention to the fact that two disused wooden pigstyes on vacant land near Tinsley Park Road are being used as human habitations, one of these disused pigstyes sheltering a man and his wife and two children and the other a man and his wife, the men in both instances being discharged soldiers; whether he is aware that these places have no water supply or sanitary arrangements of any sort; and whether he will cause inquiry to be made with a view to action being taken?

The PRESIDENT of the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Hayes Fisher)

I have seen a reference to this matter in the Press, but have not at present other information on the subject. I am, however, making inquiry. I am only too well aware that there is a crying need for further houses for the working-class population not only in Sheffield, but in many of our great industrial centres.
