HC Deb 29 January 1918 vol 101 cc1432-3
48. Major NEWMAN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has been able to ascertain the amount at present held on deposit by the Irish banks; and if he has considered the possibility of attracting some of this money to the financing of the War by means of Premium Bonds or the visit of tanks to the chief towns of the country?

Mr. BONAR LAW

As the hon. and gallant Member will be aware, it is not proposed to issue Premium Bonds. The question of encouraging the War Savings movement in all parts of the United Kingdom is receiving constant attention.

Major NEWMAN

May I ask for an answer to the first part of the question as to deposits in Irish banks?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I am sorry that it has been overlooked. Perhaps the hon. and gallant Gentleman will put a question down.

Mr. MILLAR

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether the tanks will be allowed to proceed to the smaller provincial towns as they now are in the large centres?

Mr. BONAR LAW

We are trying to extend them in every direction. My hon. Friend may be sure that so long as they produce such good results we shall use them.
