HC Deb 29 January 1918 vol 101 cc1418-9
29. Mr. E. DAVIES

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in how many cases of appeals by conscientious objectors under the Military Service Acts the Central Appeal Tribunal have granted unconditional exemption from military service?

Mr. WARD

I have been asked to reply to this question. I understand that the Central Tribunal have not granted unconditional exemption to any man on the ground of conscientious objection.

Mr. DAVIES

Can the hon. Gentleman tell me the number of appeals in which total exemption was claimed?

Mr. WARD

I am afraid that I cannot.

28. Mr. RENDALL

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has received a letter concerning a conscientious objector named A. P. Catherall, setting out certain alleged facts and sent to the Bristol magistrates; whether he has inquired into these statements; and what course he proposes to take in the matter?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir G. Cave)

I have received the letter to which the hon. Member refers. As regards the circumstances in which this man was recalled from employment under the Committee on Employment of Conscientious Objectors to service in the Army, I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to a question addressed to me by the hon. Member for Blackburn on 25th July last. Any question regarding his treatment after his recall to the Army should be addressed to the War Office.
