HC Deb 29 January 1918 vol 101 c1417
22. General Sir I. PHILIPPS

asked whether any recent decisions have been come to by the War Cabinet or Army Council on the question of the abolition of all distinctions between the old Army, the Territorial Force, and the New Armies as regards organisation of units and the placing of the officers of each regiment and corps on one list for promotion?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the answer given on the 18th instant to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Montgomeryshire. The question of placing officers of each regiment on the same list was considered by the Committee (over which my right hon. Friend the Minister of Munitions presided), and was found to be impracticable. Promotion in the New Army battalions is more rapid than in Regular battalions, so that I am afraid New Army officers would not stand to gain by the adoption of my hon. and gallant Friend's suggestion.
