HC Deb 18 January 1918 vol 101 cc608-9
Mr. ANDERSON

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware that dissatisfaction exists amongst secondary teachers with regard to the allocation by the local authorities of the supplement Grant for secondary schools; and, seeing that in many cases less than half this Grant has been applied to the financial relief of the teachers concerned, what steps he proposes to take to ensure that the Grant is applied in the proper manner?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of EDUCATION (Mr. Herbert Lewis)

My right hon. Friend is aware that in certain areas some dissatisfaction on this account has been expressed. In some cases it has not, on inquiry, proved to be well-founded; in others the matter is receiving attention. Until the action of the various school authorities in this respect has been more completely determined it is not possible to say whether the attention paid to the general view expressed by the Board is or is not satisfactory, or whether any alteration in the Regulations under which the Grants made in respect of secondary schools are administered is desirable.

Mr. ANDERSON

Is it possible for the Department to get the Return, or has his Department now got a Return, showing whether the money has been spent in accordance with the wishes of the Board of Education?

Mr. LEWIS

The hon. Member may rest assured that the Board of Education is closely following the matter, and that we will get all the necessary information.
