HC Deb 17 January 1918 vol 101 cc504-5
56. General M'CALMONT

asked the Prime Minister whether the Government proposes to proceed with the Midwives (Ireland) Bill during the present Session?

Mr. DUKE

My right hon. Friend has asked me to reply. Certain provisions of the Bill are not yet agreed upon with the parties concerned. Unless agreement is arrived at in the course of the week, I think it will not be practicable to proceed with the Bill before the Prorogation.

Sir J. D. REES

Will my right hon. Friend reconsider that decision, in view of the fact that the services of all these ladies will be required at the birth of the new Constitution?

General M'CALMONT

Will the right hon. Gentleman take steps to see that agreement is reached, if possible?

Mr. DUKE

My various duties prevent my going about trying to induce people to be reasonable over proposals of legislation. I hope the public interest will induce people to be reasonable. If they are not, I cannot promise to use personal exertions where such a large area is involved.
