HC Deb 17 January 1918 vol 101 c467
9. Mr. LYNCH

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware that ex-King Constantine is the centre in Switzerland of a group of pro-German propagandists which includes noted enemies of the Allies, such as the ex-Khedive of Egypt, M. Theotokis, who, while the representative of Greece at Berlin, plotted to bring this country under German domination, and Dr. Streit; that this group is in constant communication with the ex-Chancellor von Billow, and Prince von Hohenlohe, the chief of the German propaganda in Switzerland, and that to its activities are in part due the reverses of Italy and the defections of Russia; and whether any steps have been taken to counteract these forces?

Mr. BALFOUR

My information is in general agreement with the statements made in the hon. Gentleman's question. All steps are being taken to counteract the propaganda referred to.

Mr. LYNCH

Does not the right hon. Gentleman recognise the gravity of the fact that this Government is subsidising King Constantine indirectly?

Mr. BALFOUR

He is not subsidised by us.

Mr. LYNCH

Certainly.

13. Sir MONTAGUE BARLOW

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can state what the amount of King Constantine's pension or annual allowance is; who is responsible for its payment; and whether any portion of it is paid by this country?

Mr. BALFOUR

I would refer the hon. Member to the replies returned to the hon. Member for West Clare on the 3rd and 13th of last month.
