HC Deb 27 February 1918 vol 103 c1376
46. Major NEWMAN

asked the Prime Minister whether he will instruct the Minister of Propaganda, or other head of the appropriate Government Department, to have the recent Blue Book describing the hardships inflicted on British prisoners of war by officers, privates, nurses, and the male and female German population translated into German a ad a copy given to every German prisoner of war and interned German alien in this country, with instructions that the volume is to be studied during their leisure moments and a sufficient knowledge of its contents gained under penalty of the deprivation of some of the luxuries in food and other amenities which they have been accorded by their captors?

Mr. BONAR LAW

The hon. and gallant Member's suggestion is, I fear, impracticable.

Major NEWMAN

Would it not be a good thing to let a German officer know how our officers are treated?

Mr. BONAR LAW

I have looked at this suggestion from my hon. Friend, and I really do not think it world serve the purpose that he has in view

Mr. R. McNEILL

Does not the right hon. Gentleman think: that it would be advantageous at all events to have this Blue Book published in German and offered to the German prisoners in this country?
