HC Deb 20 February 1918 vol 103 cc737-8
39. Mr. BYRNE

asked the Minister of Munitions if he can make any statement with reference to the threatened closing down of Kynoch's Arklow factory?

40. Sir THOMAS ESMONDE

asked the Minister of Munitions what is the explanation of the closing down of the explosives works at Arklow, how many men are to be disemployed, and how many men have been dismissed and for what reason; are the Arklow works under Government control; if not, who is responsible for their direction and for the closing down of the works; whether any complaint has been made by the responsible authorities or by the War Office or by the Admiralty as to the quality of the explosives manufactured at Arklow; what has been the weekly output of explosives at Arklow for the past twelve months; has there been, any failure at any time in the delivery of explosives from Arklow; if not, what is the explanation of the closing down of this source of supply at this time; and, if the Arklow works are controlled by an explosives trust or combine, whether the Government will put the provisions of the Defence of the Realm Act in force, if necessary, to ensure their continuance in full working order while the War lasts?

Mr. KELLAWAY

I have nothing to add to the long answer given by my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Colchester to the hon. Member for West Wicklow on 18th instant.
