HC Deb 06 February 1918 vol 101 cc2238-9
25. Colonel ASHLEY

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the increased cost of living, he will consider the advisability of exempting pensions awarded to discharged soldiers and sailors and their dependants from assessment under the provisions of the Income Tax Act?

The CHANCELLOR of the EXCHEQUER (Mr. Bonar Law)

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the answer which I gave on the 12th December to my hon. and learned Friend the Member for York—of which I am sending him a copy.

Mr. PENNEFATHER

May I ask whether pensions which are earned by the laying down of men's lives ought not to be placed in a totally different category from all other forms of pensions?

Mr. BONAR LAW

It is obvious that everyone sympathises with the idea expressed in this question, but I am sure my hon. Friend will understand that I cannot go further at present.

Mr. PENNEFATHER

Will the right. hon. Gentleman take into consideration the fact that, life and limb have been lost?

Mr. BONAR LAW

Yes, of course.
