§ 96. Sir E. CARSONasked the Chief Secretary for Ireland if he is now in a position to make a statement with reference to a bonus for Irish national teachers and the arrears due to what are called paper-promoted teachers?
§ Mr. SHORTTThe Treasury have intimated their willingness to adjust the payment of war bonus in cases where at present teachers suffer loss of income as the result of promotion. The Treasury have not, however, up to the present, seen their way to agree to the concession sought in the case of "paper promoted" teachers, but I am still in communication with them.
§ Sir J. CRAIGIs there any possibility of having this matter arranged before we break up for the Recess?
§ Mr. SHORTTSo far as I am concerned there would be, but perhaps my hon. and gallant Friend will put down a question to the Treasury.
§ Sir J. CRAIGPerhaps my right hon. Friend would bring his more weighty pressure to bear on the Treasury?
§ Mr. SHORTTNot more weighty, certainly.
