HC Deb 02 August 1918 vol 109 cc785-6
8. Mr. KING

asked the Prime Minister whether General Smuts' speech at Glasgow on 17th May expressed and expresses the views only of General Smuts or of the War Cabinet; and, if it expresses the views of the Cabinet, whether action can now be taken, when the military outlook of the Allies is rapidly improving, to explore the possibility of an early and honourable peace?

Mr. BONAR LAW

As was evident from the speech itself, General Smuts expressed only his personal views. As regards the last part of the question, the Government will always be ready to consider proposals for a satisfactory peace.
