HC Deb 29 April 1918 vol 105 cc1294-5
73. Mr. A. WILLIAMS

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office at what intervals a definite settlement of each soldier's account is made and a balance struck; whether, owing to such settlements not being arrived at more frequently, there is dissatisfaction on the part of many men who dispute the balance of their accounts, such accounts running back in some cases for years; and whether he can arrange that every solder's account is balanced and a settlement arrived at once a month?

Mr. FORSTER

As regards the accounts of soldiers serving in the field, I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for West Bradford on the 5th November last. For soldiers not serving in the field, the accounts are balanced monthly, and the balances notified to company commanders.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Will it not be notified to the soldiers themselves?

Mr. FORSTER

No, that would throw a volume of work upon the Pay Office that they would be quite unable to carry out.
