HC Deb 29 April 1918 vol 105 cc1257-8
22. Captain WRIGHT

asked the President of the Local Government Board whether he will, in the interests of the nation's food supply, bring pressure to bear upon the local urban authorities, and especially the big municipalities, so to organise their system of collection of refuse that the thousands of tons of kitchen waste daily destroyed or dumped may be used for the Feeding of pigs and poultry?

The PRESIDENT of the LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Hayes Fisher)

This matter is receiving full consideration. A National Salvage Council has been appointed, on which my Department and the other Departments concerned are represented, and it is one of the functions of this Council to stimulate municipalities so as to secure the best use of refuse of all kinds. Conferences have already been held with local authorities with a view to further action in this direction, and I am hopeful that practical results will ensue.
