HC Deb 29 April 1918 vol 105 c1257
21. Mr. WATT

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether the Board of Agriculture's attention has been drawn to the fact that the large Landowners are not doing their fair proportion of ploughing up grass lands on the plea that they have not horses for such work; whether his figures bear out this opinion; is he aware that high prices are being got this year for grazing land, sometimes as high as £5 an acre, and that these prices accrue to those who refuse to act according to the Government's demands; and will he take any action, with the assistance of the Food Controller, to limit grazing prices or to take over all grazing lands and apportion them?

Mr. MUNRO

I have no grounds for thinking that the large landowners of Scotland are not doing their fair proportion of ploughing up grass lands. I am aware that high rents are in some instances being obtained for grazing land, but I am not aware that it is in consequence of a refusal to comply with a request from the Board of Agriculture. I cannot give any general undertaking as suggested by my hon. and learned Friend.
