asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether a legal assistant to the Controller of Lands in his Department was recently advertised for; if so, how many applicants were there for this post; who has been appointed; and what are his qualifications for the office?

Yes, Sir; a legal assistant in the Lands Directorate of the War Office was recently advertised for. There were 110 applicants, and a Mr. J. M. The qualifications for the post are, inter alia, a general knowledge of law and practice, experience in the handling of cases, and knowledge of book-keeping and accounts.

Is the person of military age or under?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I believe he is of military age, but his category is C3.

Mr. WATT

Had it been arranged beforehand, before it was advertised, that this gentleman should get this appointment?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I have no knowledge of that. If, however, my hon. and learned Friend has any further particulars and will submit, them to me, I will make inquiries.
