HC Deb 23 April 1918 vol 105 cc831-2
6. Mr. ELLIS DAVIES

asked the Undersecretary of State for War whether he can give an assurance that all Welsh-speaking Welshmen called up under the Military Service Bill (i.e., those between forty-one and fifty-one) will be trained together by Welsh-speaking instructors?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I regret that it is not possible to give this undertaking, but my hon. Friend may rest assured that every consideration which circumstances allow will be given to national sentiment, It should be borne in mind that men of the age referred to will in many cases go to technical or other units which are not territorialised.

Major DAVIES

Can the hon. Gentleman assure the House that the instructors will be able to speak Welsh?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I cannot very well give that assurance to my hon. and gallant Friend, but I will communicate with the authorities.

Colonel ASHLEY

Is there any guarantee that the Welsh will understand English?
