HC Deb 23 April 1918 vol 105 c850
33. Mr. HAYDN JONES

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty on what date local authorities were informed that the naval authorities on the coast were instructed to arrange the funerals of bodies of merchant seamen who have lost their lives as a result of the acts of the enemy?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the ADMIRALTY (Dr. Macnamara)

The new arrangements with regard to the burial of the bodies of merchant seamen by the naval authorities, which came into force in January, were communicated to the Local Government Board on 17th March. The actual notification of local authorities is a matter for that Department, and steps are, I understand, being taken with this object in view. As I stated on 19th March, the naval authorities were instructed regarding this matter on 17th January.

Mr. WATT

What occurred between the two dates, 17th January and 17th March?

Dr. MACNAMARA

I cannot tell what my hon. Friend has in mind, but if he has any further facts and will communicate them to me I shall be glad to inquire.
