HC Deb 09 April 1918 vol 104 c1319
26. Mr. PRINGLE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he can state the tonnage of the new ships completed in March?

Dr. MACNAMARA

As announced in the Press on 4th April, the new merchant ships completed in United Kingdom yards in March amounted to 161,674 gross tons.

29. Commander BELLAIRS

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether the gross figures of the shipbuilding efforts of the British, Allies, and neutrals for the War up to the end of 1917, aggregating 6,606,275 tons, includes sailing vessels which do not enter the war zone; and whether he can state the amount and the corresponding loss in steamers of over 1,600 tons such as are used for supplying this country and Europe?

Dr. MACNAMARA

Yes, Sir; sailing vessels are included. They are, of course, also included in the losses. My hon. and gallant Friend is not correct in saying they do not enter the war zone. I am afraid the information asked for in the last part of the question is not available.
