HC Deb 22 November 1917 vol 99 cc1362-3
89. Mr. TIMOTHY DAVIES

asked the Minister of National Service the number of men of military age employed in his Department; whether he will state the number employed, respectively, on secretarial, clerical, technical, and general work; and whether he has satisfied himself that some of those men would not be more successfully employed with His Majesty's military or naval forces?

The MINISTER of NATIONAL SERVICE (Sir Auckland Geddes)

The number of men of military age employed at the Ministry of National Service is 133, of whom ninety-five have either served in the Army in this War, or have been rejected and discharged from the Reserve as totally and permanently unfit. Three of the staff, although of military age, are excepted from the provisions of the Military Service Acts. Of the remaining thirty-five, only three are physically fit, and these are permanent civil servants of senior grade, whose services I propose to retain. The remainder without exception are of lower category.
