HC Deb 22 November 1917 vol 99 cc1363-4
82. Mr. DUNCAN MILLAR

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department the number of collieries in Scotland in which committees of miners have been formed to assist in the better working of the mines during the war, and also in the enlistment of miners; and if he can state the results obtained in Scotland through the action of these committees?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for the HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. Brace)

I am informed that very few committees of this kind were formed in Scotland-where the record in respect of absenteeism was particularly good-and that any which have been set up have for some time past suspended action. As the hon. Member is aware, a good deal of short time is being worked.

83. Mr. MILLAR

asked whether any arrangements have been made for the provision of baths for miners at the pit-head under the provisions of the Coal Mines Act, 1911; and in how many districts such baths have been provided?

Mr. BRACE

I am not aware of any cases where baths have been installed under the provisions of the Act, but several instances have been reported where baths have been provided under other arrangements.
