HC Deb 15 March 1917 vol 91 c1257
35. Mr. FLAVIN

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether he is aware that the inmates of the Listowel workhouse are unable to get sugar; and will he make such representations as are necessary so that the inmates of the workhouse will be provided with a reasonable supply of sugar?

Mr. DUKE

I am informed that the master of the Listowel workhouse reported on the 1st instant that he had no sugar, and that he could not obtain any in the town. The Sugar Commission are, I believe, fully alive to the difficulties of obtaining sugar for public institutions in Ireland; and they are taking steps to improve the distribution.

Mr. FLAVIN

Has any representations been made to the Sugar Commission?

Mr. DUKE

The Sugar Commission have been steadily dealing with this matter for some months.

Mr. DEVLIN

Has the right hon. Gentleman done anything to influence the Sugar Commission to send someone to safeguard Irish interests in Ireland?

Mr. DUKE

I have taken a variety of steps where suggestions have been referred to me by my advisers.

Mr. DEVLIN

Can the right hon. Gentleman state what the steps were?
