HC Deb 14 March 1917 vol 91 c1065
69. Mr. CATHCART WASON

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture if he is aware that it has been publicly stated that no agricultural labourer will be called up without the approval of the agricultural courts committee or his own; and if, to allay the anxiety among farmers, he will take the necessary steps to make this decision known?

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of AGRICULTURE (Mr. Prothero)

This is true as regards men enrolled for National Service, but it is not true as regards men called up by the Army. Neither I nor the county war agricultural committees have any power to claim against the War Office that any man is indispensable.
