HC Deb 05 March 1917 vol 91 cc36-7
72. Mr. SNOWDEN

asked the Minister of Labour if he has received a request to arbitrate in a dispute between the Aberdeen City Council and the women tramway workers; if the cause of the dispute is the breaking of a pledge given by the city council that women who took the places of men in the tramway service should be paid at the same rate as the men; and if his Department has any power to insist that such a bargain should be kept by the city council?

The MINISTER of LABOUR (Mr. Hodge)

The Chief Industrial Commissioner has received from the Amalgamated Association of Tramway and Vehicle Workers a request for arbitration in a dispute which has arisen between the Aberdeen Town Council and their employés in the Tramway Department, the alleged cause being that mentioned by the hon. Member, and he is in communication with the corporation on the subject.
