HC Deb 05 March 1917 vol 91 cc26-7
47. Mr. DILLON

asked the Prime Minister whether his attention has been called to the scheme inviting women to volunteer for service with the Army; whether that scheme was published with the consent of the Director of National Service; and whether its publication at this time had the sanction of the War Cabinet?

Mr. MACPHERSON

My right hon. Friend has asked me to answer this question. The War Office announcement to which the hon. Member refers was not an invitation to volunteer for service with the Army in France, but a statement of the terms and conditions of that service. The statement was published with the consent of the Director-General of National Service.

Mr. DILLON

Do I understand from the statement that though women have the right to volunteer they have not been approached by the War Office to do so?

Mr. MACPHERSON

I am told not yet.
