HC Deb 25 June 1917 vol 95 c29
64. Mr. W. THORNE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty if he is aware that the men at the Royal Naval College, Osborne, have made complaints about the food they are receiving, and that their beer allowance of one pint per day has been stopped without any compensation allowance; and if he can state the reasons why the additional bonus granted to the workers in the dockyards and other naval establishments has not been paid to the Royal Navy men at Osborne?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the ADMIRALTY (Dr. Macnamara)

No complaints have been received by the authorities at the Royal Naval College, Osborne, as to the quality of the food supplied to Cadet servants, who are fed from the Cadets' mess. The issue of beer, which is not a recognised allowance, has been stopped on account of the inability of the brewers to supply it. These employés are already in receipt of a war bonus of 7s. a week, and I must point out that as they are victualled they are not affected by the increased cost of living to the same extent as dockyard workmen, who have to purchase the whole of their food out of their wages.
