HC Deb 22 June 1917 vol 94 cc2116-7
4. Mr. WATT

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether his attention has been called to the quantity of rhubarb that is going to waste throughout the country; and, if so, whether any steps are being taken to induce people to preserve such, and to provide them with sugar for the purpose?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

Sugar for jam making is being provided in as large a quantity as possible, but the amount available will be insufficient to meet all demands for that purpose. It is, important, therefore, that those who have rhubarb should, so far as possible, adopt methods of preservation which do not involve the use of sugar. The Ministry of Food and the Board of Agriculture have made suggestions as to such methods.

Mr. WATT

Would it not be wise to lay this suggestion before the public? I do do not think the public are aware of it.

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

I will convey that suggestion to the Ministry of Food.
