HC Deb 22 June 1917 vol 94 c2120
22. Mr. GINNELL

asked the Prime Minister why the recruiting authorities are allowed to disregard the law and repeated promises of successive Governments exempting Irish migratory labourers from compulsory military service; and whether he will have the Order immediately cancelled which calls up for the Army a Mayo migratory labourer named P. O'Brien, described as Class No. 9, number in military register 514, who worked some weeks as a farm labourer in England in 1916, and some weeks at munition works in 1917, who is now at Huddersfield; whose home is in county Mayo, where his parents are, both old and dependent on him, one of them an invalid; and who has never in a way forfeited his right of exemption as an Irishman?

Mr. MACPHERSON

Inquiries are being made into the facts of this case, and, pending a report from the recruiting officer concerned, the calling-up notice of this man has been cancelled. The result of the inquiries will be communicated to the hon. Member when they are received.
